¶ EGU General Assembly 2024

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly is one of the largest and most prestigious geoscience conferences in the world. It attracts over 15,000 attendees from more than 100 countries, making it a hub for international collaboration and knowledge exchange. The conference covers all disciplines of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences, providing a comprehensive platform for scientists to present their research, engage in discussions, and network with peers.
¶ URS Contributions:
Members of the URS Research Cluster presented six contributions from four projects at the EGU General Assembly:
- RADON: from J. Suilmann - Groundwater life expectancy simulations in strongly coupled density-dependent flow above a salt dome
- MeQUR: from F. Kiszkurno - Hypothesis-testing and assisted-history-matching applied to evaluate uncertainty of model selection and parameter values: a case study of the impact of thermo-osmosis
- REDUKLIM: from C. Kaufhold - Uncertainties in climate sensitivity and residual carbon emissions permit for a hothouse climate ahead
- Smart Monitoring:
from N. Menzel - Optimal Experimental Design strategies for geoelectrical monitoring of fluid transport processes
from M. F. Morales Oreamuno - Error-aware surrogate modelling with input dimension reduction for groundwater modelling in heterogenous media
from Q. Chen - The site selection data hub: a data-centric approach for integrated simulation workflow management in radioactive waste disposal site selection
These contributions reflect the diverse and impactful research being conducted within our cluster, ranging from radionuclide risk assessment and mitigation strategies to climate change adaptation and advanced environmental monitoring techniques.
¶ Site Selection Day 2024

The Site Selection Day is a key event dedicated to the selection and evaluation of sites for the storage and disposal of radioactive waste. Hosted by the Institute of Endlager Systems (IELF) at TU Clausthal, this conference brings together experts, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the latest advancements and challenges in site selection processes. The conference typically features around 500 participants, including a significant number of international attendees.

The URS Research Cluster is proud to have prepared five contributions from four projects at the Site Selection Day this year:
- Global URS: from K. Kurgyis - Launch of a research initiative on uncertainties and robustness related to the safety of high-level radioactive waste repositories
- MeQUR: from A. A. Chaudhry - Effects of inhomogeneity and anisotropy on the integrity of the geological barrier of a high-level waste repository
- ENSURE: from F. Fritsch - Human factors in the site selection process
- REDUKLIM: from M. Johnen - Reduction of scenario uncertainties through climate modelling
- GeoBlocks: from J. Yang - GeoBlocks project: Comparison of interpolation strategies in geological modelling for safe repositories
Additionally, TU Clausthal, the hosting institution, is a key member of our research cluster, further emphasizing our strong presence and commitment to this important field.
