¶ AboutSince April 2017, the BGE has taken over the task to research and select a repository site for especially high-level radioactive waste in accordance with the Atomic Energy Act. The site selection procedure launched in September 2017, and Phase I was completed in September 2020 with 90 areas identified with favourable geological conditions in accordance with the Repository Site Selection Act (StandAG). As a next step, preliminary safety analyses are to be carried out in order to propose which siting regions should undergo surface exploration. According to the preliminary safety investigations, the site with the best possible safety is chosen considering geological and geophysical findings, and results that are obtained from model calculations also including these findings. As each of these elements is associated with uncertainties, quantifying these uncertainties is a central component of the site selection process. |

¶ ResearchTo assess the arising uncertainties and to handle the robustness of repository systems, BGE called for a research cluster to identify open questions and to close the gaps in knowledge through appropriate research in accordance with the current state of scientific knowledge. As the research cluster addresses various topics, five thematic groups are created within the cluster, each worked on by individual research associations:
